In Italy, most people consider the wolf to be the unofficial symbol of the country. The gray wolf, also known as the Apennine wolf, lives in the Italian Apennine Mountains. In Italy it is the only large predator. Legend has it that the twin brothers who founded the city of Rome, Romulus and Remus, were raised by a she-wolf who cared for them and protected them from wild animals as she raised them as her own children.
